For Shane Button, a proud Dunghutti and Yuin man becoming an electrician wasn’t just a career choice; it was a life-changing decision that set him on a path to uplift both himself and his community. With limited formal education, Shane once felt the idea of completing a Certificate III in Electrotechnology was beyond his reach. But through dedication, and a commitment to his personal and professional growth, Shane has not only transformed his own life but has become a source of inspiration and guidance for others, particularly young Indigenous apprentices.
“I’ve always been passionate about my Indigenous community and saw the trade as a means to uplift and empower young Indigenous apprentices,” he explains.
Determined to succeed, Shane dedicated up to three hours daily to enhance his technical skills. Through vocational education and training (VET), he found a supportive environment that aligned with his learning style.
“VET offered a supportive environment where I could excel despite my educational background as it fostered a sense of belonging and empowerment,” he says.
“Offering a hands-on approach that suited my learning style, my apprenticeship provided practical skills directly applicable to my chosen industry.”
As Shane's skills grew, so did his confidence. While working on the redevelopment of the Prince of Wales Hospital, he was involved in each stage of construction, gaining extensive experience in electrical work and other building-related tasks. The practical nature of the apprenticeship helped Shane develop both job-specific and life skills, including resilience, determination, teamwork, and a clear sense of purpose.
Shane’s apprenticeship was about more than technical skills. Through his journey, he became a mentor to younger apprentices, guiding them through their early training and showing them that “anything is possible with dedication and perseverance.” His employer quickly recognised Shane’s value as a skilled electrician and a leader who could inspire and support others.
Shane’s desire to make a difference extends beyond his workplace. Actively involved in community initiatives aimed at uplifting Indigenous youth, he envisions using his skills to drive positive change.
“Looking ahead, I aspire to establish a business that serves as a platform for training and employment within my community,” he says.
“It’s a vision rooted in my belief in the transformative power of education and opportunity.”
Now in permanent employment and armed with skills that he once thought were out of reach, Shane credits his apprenticeship for his life-changing transformation.
“Prior to this opportunity, my prospects were limited, but now I stand transformed – equipped with skills that have opened doors I never thought possible,” he says.
Shane’s journey is proof that with the right support, dedication, and hands-on training, anything is possible. If you're ready to take the first step toward a rewarding career, explore apprenticeship opportunities today and start shaping your future.
